Springvale Public Library invites children to join the IditaRead Reading Challenge that runs from March 5-31, 2022.  This exciting reading program is sponsored through the Maine State Library using Beanstack.  You can start right now by logging onto www.maine.beanstack.org or downloading the Beanstack app.  In the app, search for Maine State Library, then choose Springvale a few screens later.   Follow along with the Iditarod race.  Every minute you read equals 4 miles of the route.  Each location you reach earns you a virtual badge. We will be posting how we are doing on the trail in the children’s room and everyone who participates will earn a free book at the end of the challenge.  Feel free to contact Sheila, Youth Services Librarian, at sdube@springvalelibrary.org with any questions.

The Stories Quilts Tell with New England Quilt Museum Curator Pam Weeks, has been rescheduled to April 20.

Our April book club selection is The Exiles by Christina Baker Kline. Books are available at the front desk now. Large print books are available upon request. We’ll discuss it in-person and via Zoom on April 6 at 5:30 p.m.

Adult Fiction: Honor by Thrity UmrigarThe story of two Indian women, one a victim of a brutal crime and the other an Americanized journalist returning to India to cover the story, and the courage they inspire in each other. This is a popular Reese’s Book Club novel recently published in January of this year.

Non-Fiction: There is Nothing For You Here : Finding Opportunity in the 21^st Century by Fiona HillForeign policy expert and key impeachment witness Fiona Hill reveals how declining opportunity has set America on the grim path of modern Russia–and shows how we can return hope to our forgotten places. In this deeply personal account, she shares what she has learned, and explains that only by expanding opportunity can we save our democracy.

Young Adult: Bounce Back by Misako Rocks! – This middle school graphic novel shares the heartfelt story of Lilico’s unexpected move from Japan where she excels in basketball to New York and all the issues of learning a new culture, language and friends.  Lilico learns how to make it through the obstacles with the help of her cat Nicco who becomes here guardian spirit.  The art is brightly colored, action packed and there is a bit of romance, too.

Children’s Picture Book: Frankenslime by Joy Keller and illustrated by Ashley Belote, Victoria Franken and her helpful dog Igor do inspiration research into slime from materials around their house. They make so much slime that Victoria starts to be bored and has to rethink how they make it.  Rainbow cloud slime, Intergalactic space slime and Glow-in-the-dark zombie slime result.  When she takes it one step further, the slime becomes ALIVE!  When the slime, affectionately named Goop, reminds her to record the recipe, a new lab-partner relationship is created.
