Obituary: Shirley Greims Cormier Goodwin

December 14, 1929-February 13, 2022

Shirley Greims Cormier Goodwin, 92, of Springvale, died on Sunday, February 13, 2022, at Summer Commons Senior care facility in Sanford, ME, where she resided for six years. She was born on December 14, 1929, the daughter of Herbert Greims and Dorothy Stanley Greims Mucci. She attended a one-room schoolhouse in Shapleigh and then local Sanford schools and graduated from Sanford High School in 1946.

On June 13, 1964, she married Ronald “Red” Goodwin at the Springvale First Baptist Church, where she had been a member since.  She had four children from a prior marriage and two more with Red.

Always a busy, hardworking, active woman, she raised her six children while maintaining a full-time job packing apples with the Twin Ridge Corporation in Acton, Maine from the early 1960’s until her retirement at age 73 in 2003.  Her work gave her lifelong friends, fun and fond memories, not to mention summers off to enjoy her family, home, yard and pool.  To her mind, her greatest achievements were her home and family and she was always happiest when there were children around, including her favorite four-legged ones.

Shirley loved a good game of cards or mixed doubles ping-pong, Lawrence Welk and Elvis, crying at the end of “An Affair to Remember” and “The Way We Were,” babies, Christmas and a daily dose of “The Young & the Restless.” She also loved dining out.  She had a wicked sense of humor, a cackling laugh, and a fondness for a good practical joke.  It should come as a surprise to no one that a clumsy moment from a friend or family member could reduce her to uncontrollable fits of laughter, while the object of her continued amusement tended to his or her wounded “pride.”

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 2009, two brothers Rodney Greims and Richard Mucci and a sister Judith Mucci.  She is survived by her six children: Paula Cormier Mansfield of Sanford; Rodney Cormier and wife Joyce of Bethesda, MD; Claudette Cormier Drinkwater and husband Mark of West Bath, Scott Cormier of Springvale; Kandis Goodwin and husband Frank Libby of Waterboro; Tracy Goodwin of Springvale, a brother Ronald Mucci and wife Colleen of Shapleigh, many grandchildren, great grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews.

At Shirley’s request, there will be no public services.  A warm weather burial next to her husband will be private at Riverside Cemetery in Springvale.
