News Notes: February 6, 2022

If you were wondering what the big crowd was at Gowen Park on February 5 (besides the sledders), it was the York District BSA, which held its 2022 Klondike Derby at the park and and on the Mousam Trail. Roughly 175 scouts and leaders participated, with 20 sleds competing in the challenge. They also did a good turn and removed a 40 gallon bag of litter from the trails.

Matthew Toth of Sanford has announced his candidacy for State Representative for what will become House District 143, when the State’s redistricting and renumbering plan takes effect in January of next year. The district will cover south Sanford and parts of the city center. Most of that part of Sanford is now in District #4, represented by Patty Hymanson of York, as it currently includes parts of York and Ogunquit, but the redistricting will reduce that fragmentation. Look for more info on how Sanford’s Statehouse Districts are changing in an upcoming issue.

There will not be a special election to replace State Rep. John Tuttle, who passed away recently. (The primary election for all Maine legislature seats will be held in June.) The City Council may appoint someone to fill his seat on the City Council for the remainder of the year, but has not discussed it yet.

The Sanford Community Adult Education brochures, which were lost by the US Postal Service, have been reprinted and mailed as an insert in the Register Gazette. Look for it in your mailbox!

Congratulations and thanks to Paul Shaw and Jason Wagner for twenty-five years of service to the City of Sanford!

Joe Hanslip has rejoined the Board of Directors of York County Shelter Programs.

The first winners in the Sanford High School Music Boosters giant prize raffle have been drawn. If you bought one (or more) tickets, keep an eye out for a text or email in case you win! The first winner, lucky Sanford High School teacher John Hamilton, bought just one ticket, from one of his students. Mr. Hamilton is pictured below with some of his students holding his many prizes all generously donated by Sanford businesses Brink Chiropractic and Frannie’s Mini Donuts.
