The Sanford High School wrestling team turned a golden opportunity into gold last week, winning the team title at the Zeb Leavitt Memorial Tournament at Cheverus High School in Portland. The Spartans had not originally been scheduled to participate, but were added to the slate at the last minute when another team had to withdraw. Sanford scored 154 points and had five individual titles in various weight classes as well. A total of 82 wrestlers on 11 teams competed in the Tournament. Spartans who placed in the tournament were:

  • 1st James Blood-106 pound class
  • 2nd Mason VanGeison- 113
  • 1st James Chaplick- 120
  • 1st Luke Callis- 138
  • 1st Kyle Nickerson- 145
  • 3rd Nick Farrington- 152
  • 2nd Jack Callis- 170
  • 3rd Hunter Stevens- 170
  • 1st Adrian Zea- 182
  • 4th Isaac Valley- 182

Joshua Werner, pictured above left, who was the T.W. Cole Post #19 winner of the American Legion’s Oratorical Contest in December, also won the District #1 Regional competition held January 9 here in Sanford. Josh will now go on to the State competition on February 12. The Contest focuses on various aspects of the U.S. Constitution. Congratulations Josh, and good luck in the next round!


Elizabeth Daly has joined Sanford Community Adult Education as College and Career Advisor. Elizabeth comes to SCAE with years of educational experience both in the United States as well as abroad in London, England. Previous to traveling Elizabeth was a Jobs for Maine Graduate teacher in our district.
