A group of 5th grade boys (pictured above) showed a true act of kindness during early dismissal last Wednesday. They rescued a dog found in the woods that appeared injured. While some boys stayed back keeping the dog warm and safe, others ran back to school to get an adult for help.

Students in SRTC’s Fire Science program recently toured Southern Maine Community College. SMCC provides both an Associate’s Degree and Certificate program in Fire Science, making SMCC a great option for students interested in continuing their education in the field. SRTC’s Career Planning Coordinator, Jennifer Bartlett, said “The SRTC group was wonderful and the SMCC Fire Science instructor’s presentation and interaction with the students was outstanding. We had a beautiful, though chilly, picnic lunch outside overlooking the water!”
Shealyn Gagnon, Carl J. Lamb’s K&1 SEL Teacher has been reading the book “The Day the Crayons Quit” by Drew Daywalt to students. The book is filled with many different feelings and small problems. After reading the book they discussed the size of the problems and how to solve small problems.. She followed up with a coloring worksheet where the students were asked to draw their own crayons and give them each a feeling. The results were wonderful and very creative! Next week they will be working on a final lesson on big problems before moving on to the zones of regulation.
Every Friday our students are having fun by wearing Sanford Spartans gear, Sanford athletic shirts, CJL wear or just good old red to show School Spirit. The class from each grade with the highest percentage of School Spirit earns a trophy to display in their classroom for the week.
Ms. Bourque, student support center teacher at Carl J. Lamb is running a music club one K class at a time. They meet once a week and learn the basics of rhythm with a variety of different percussion instruments.
There’s a new television in the front hallway displaying “Happenings at CJL”
Grade 3 students in Mr. Eldredge’s PE class (pictured above) are learning how to be an elf by completing climbing, throwing and catching, building, quickness and agility, plus flying.
The colder weather on Saturday morning did not stop our MCS Turkey Trotters from participating in the first fundraiser of the 2021-2022 school year. Thank you to all of the families and businesses who came out to support our students in action. The PTA was so grateful for the success and the donations to make this an annual event.
Gratitude Spirit Day – The Student Ambassadors planned the November spirit day by asking students to wear green or gray to show their gratitude.
Empathy Assembly – Mrs. McClure introduced our new theme of the month, empathy, and shared ways we can be empathetic towards others. The students at MCS were surprised with a visitor from the AWS shelter as a kick-off for the pet food collection challenge this month. Students are also collecting mittens and participating in an empathy challenge at home with family members. It will be a busy month at MCS.
Congratulations to the 50 students who had perfect attendance for the first trimester as they were recognized during our December assembly.
Read Aloud Walk – To celebrate our theme of gratitude and the upcoming holiday, the Student Engagement Team put together a book walk outside of MCS. Classes will have the opportunity to participate in a walk and read aloud the pages of Thank You, Omu! by Oge Mora. It’s a touching story about a grandmother who makes soup for a variety of community members, but what happens when there is none left for her? Thank you to Mr. Bisson for creating such a
fun activity!
Noel Leigh, Sanford Pride Elementary Grade 2 Teacher, applied for and was selected to receive one of the Maine Environmental Education Association’s 2021-2022 MiniGrant for Outdoor Learning. The Maine Environmental Education Association (MEEA) provides grant opportunities to public schools statewide to advance outdoor learning efforts. Noel’s grant application requested funds to set up an outdoor classroom for students K-4, at our new school, Sanford Pride Elementary. We have identified a need to provide students with alternative learning opportunities to help re-engage the many students that have been primarily exposed to online or remote learning and outdoor education is a great way to do this!
Last week, fifth graders learned how to insert LED’s (light emitting diodes) into copper tape circuits to create cards that light up. This STEM lesson is part of students’ E-GOAL time (enrichment electives designed to enhance learning).
In art class, Ms. Farnham introduced marionettes to the first graders. They loved watching the marionette scene from “The Sound of Music” as a means of sparking their learning!
The number of enrolled students at SCAE is steadily increasing and our winter term began December 1. The Enrichment Program is ready to begin in January, 2022 with more offerings than we have ever had! The Enrichment brochure has been sent to the printer and will be in mailboxes soon.
