Angela Avery is a new 8th grade School Counselor at Sanford Middle School. We are pleased to announce that she will be a presenter at the National School Counselor Conference this July in Austin, Texas. This Conference is attended by approximately 4000+ national and international school counselors every year. Her topic will be Connecting All Students with Suicide Prevention. Angela is passionate about the work of suicide prevention and on behalf of Sanford School Departments K-12 School Counselors, we are so proud to have her as one of us, working with our students in Sanford.
The Sanford High Theater Club put on their fall performance of Almost, Maine during the first weekend in November. It played Friday during the school day for SHS students and then on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon for the general public. The students performed splendidly and the show was a great success. We are looking forward to Mama Mia in the spring!
SRTC sponsored our annual College and Career Fair on Tuesday, November 9th after a one year hiatus due to COVID. We are proud to say that this event can be done safely! Students at both SHS and SRTC learned about their options from 80 different colleges, employers and branches of the military who were our guests for the day. Representatives were thrilled with the organization of the facility, the structure of the day, and the students, who were praised as being well-prepared, interested, and smart. Many thanks to several SHS and SRTC individuals and groups who made everything come together, from the overall organization and prep, food, set up and clean up, signage and communications and guest services including check-in, greeting, and parking. SRTC students were involved in every aspect of this event and, as always, helped us to shine!
Sanford Middle School’s annual pie fundraiser was a HUGE success this year. Students sold 1232 pies – the most ever in the State of Maine! Top sellers in each grade were given their choice of a $25 gift card and the opportunity to “pie” a staff member. Runners-up each got a $10 gift card. Several staff members and Student Leadership members assisted in distributing over 1200 pies in 2 hours!
At CJL we have an attitude of gratitude! Our Student Engagement Team has creatied this wonderful example of how we show our core values as a whole school. Grace’s feathers are filled with messages of appreciation and gratitude. It’s so nice to see everyone coming together, working toward a common goal: gratitude! Grace the Grateful Turkey is growing every day at CJL. Here are some of the things students are thankful for: my friends, my Mom and Dad, my house and my school, my teacher, my family and my pets, carving pumpkins and pumpkin pie, lunch.
For the month of November, our students have been working on “gratitude.” We have gratitude trees in each hallway of our school and students have brought home leaves for students and families to fill out in regards to what they are thankful for. Our trees are quickly becoming vibrantly filled with leaves.
Leading up to Veteran’s Day, we started an “Our MCS Heroes” wall where staff and students could bring pictures of family members who have served our country. Classes have been learning about what it means to be a Veteran and the six branches of service, so students have been making personal connections with our wall of heroes.
Second graders have put a great deal of effort into their narrative writing pieces. They have spent time celebrating their writing pieces by reading their narratives to their classmates and recognizing specific components of each writing piece. They have done a great job!
The first Assistant Principal for the Day at SPE was Darius B. While AP for the Day, Darius had an opportunity to greet students off of the bus, inspect the bathrooms and cafeteria, visit classrooms, make an announcement, use the walkie-talkie and hand out High-Fives to deserving students. Darius shared that his favorite part of the day was the classroom observations because he got to check on the classrooms, and students and make sure everyone was learning. He had a very busy morning and even commented “Wow – being an AP is exhausting!” Darius began his role as AP for the Day with a personalized badge, his beverage of choice (apple juice) and a smile for all of the students arriving at SPE by bus.
