From the Sanford Police Department:
On July 17, 2020, at approximately 2:23 a.m., officers responded to the Mid-Town Mall, 890 Main Street, for a reported burglary. A passerby reported the front window of the Family Dollar store had been smashed out. As officers responded and investigated, it became clear that the suspect(s) had stolen packages of cookies, other miscellaneous candy, and an umbrella. The weather at the time of the burglary was clear, but rain was in the forecast. At least one package of cookies was damaged during the incident, and an officer was able to follow a trail of cookie crumbs down the stairs of the Mid-Town Mall and onto Riverside Avenue where the trail was lost.
After a thorough investigation, which included at least one search warrant that led to the recovery of the umbrella, two suspects were charged in this case—one adult and one juvenile. On July 23, Jonathan Gillis, 18, of Sanford, was arrested on the charge of Burglary, a Class C felony. The juvenile, age 15 of Sanford, was charged with Burglary on Wednesday, July 29, and released to their guardian with a future court date.
