School Notes: December 13

Willard School recently ran a contest seeking the best student from each grade level (plus a runner-up) to be the best advocate for service/therapy dogs. Entrants were invited to research the dogs and write an essay on the benefits of dogs in the classroom. The winning entries have been posted on the school department’s website at sanford.org/o/willard-school/article/364372.

Bella, a 7th Grader at Sanford Middle School, is currently being featured in a photo contest on Ranger Rick Online. If she gets the most votes, her photo, “Sunset in the Woods,” will appear in the print version of the magazine. If you want to help Bella, follow this link: https://rangerrick.org/photo-contest/vote/ where you can vote once per day.

At Sanford High School, the High Five Award is a staff-nominated award given to students who they have seen lending a hand to others, doing a good deed, or working in the community. High five awards should be given for acts of kindness that are out of the ordinary, or to recognize students that are consistently helping others.   Award winners for the month of November were: Charity Junkins, Irelynn Boyd, Emma LeConte, Jasmin Espinosa-Gonzalez, Laila Adawadker, Bannen Al Beadhany, Jadon Winchell, Mason Lane, Mollie Poyner, Faith Scott, Tyler Berube, Bobby Murphy, Wynter Ham and Andrew Dumond.

On December 17 and December 18, students at Margaret Chase Smith School will be watching the National Touring Performance of “Charlotte’s Web,” created by TheaterWorks USA, virtually in their classrooms. This will be a school-wide activity that aligns with their EMPATHY core value for the month of December. The play is based on E.B. White’s classic book, written in 1952, about a beloved pig named Wilbur and his two unlikely friends, Charlotte and Fern. Students are encouraged to dress up like one of their favorite characters from the book for this special event.

The Sanford Backpack Program‘s very successful Boxes of Joy initiative was featured on NewsCenter Maine. SHS student Grace Davie explained the initiative. Check it out here!
