The folks who plant the flowers at key intersections in Sanford and Springvale are looking for new members for their club.
The next meeting of Southern Maine Garden Club is 1 to 3 pm on Thursday, June 20, at Springvale Library. The scheduled speaker is Pamela Durack, the horticulture and landscaping instructor at Southern Maine Career Center.
The club has been in existence for 28 years. Its primary purpose is educational but involves social and community service aspects as well. The Garden Club designs, orders and plants the flowers in the islands in Springvale and Sanford, Central Park Statues and Gateway Park. After the plantings, the town of Sanford is diligent about watering and fertilizing. The Garden Club also has a yearly plant sale that takes place on the first Saturday in June.
Benefits of joining the Garden Club include: sharing of information and ideas from other gardeners, receiving state and local garden newsletters, hearing monthly speakers, receiving news about upcoming gardening events, and meeting new friends and fellow gardeners.
If you are someone who enjoys gardening, or who would like to learn about gardening, the club would make you feel welcome. Knowledge about gardening is not a requirement. While purposeful, educational and fun, membership does not require an enormous time commitment. If you are interested or would like more information, please email the Southern Maine Garden Club at smgc.1996@gmail.com. Folks from Lebanon, Acton, Shapleigh and North Berwick are welcome as well as in-town residents.
