Sanford and Springvale voters went to the polls on Super Tuesday, March 5, 2024, to cast their ballots in the Republican and Democratic party primary elections. This was the first election in which unenrolled voters were allowed to vote in the party primary of their choice.
In the Republican primary, former President Donald Trump received 1,011 votes, or 76.9%. Former S. Carolina Governor Nikki Haley received 276 votes, or 21%. She suspended her campaign after winning only one of the Super Tuesday states (Vermont). Ron DeSantis, Ryan Binkley and Vivek Ramaswamy, who had all previously suspended their campaigns, each received a handful of votes. The total number of votes cast in the Republican primary was 1,314, which represents 32% of registered Republicans in Sanford/Springvale, but some of those votes may have been cast by unenrolled voters rather than party members. You can see the breakdown of voters by ward in the table above. 13.1% of Republican voters voted early at City Hall or by absentee ballot.

In the Democratic primary, President Joe Biden received 558 votes, or 79.3% of the ballots cast. Minnesota Congressman Dean Phillips received 54 votes, or 7.6% (he suspended his campaign the following day). Declared write-in candidate Stephen P. Lyons, a plumber from Maryland, received no votes. 91 blank ballots were cast. A total of 703 ballots were cast in the Democratic primary, which represents 15% of registered party members, but some of those may have been cast by unenrolled voters choosing a Democratic ballot. 26.8% of Democratic voters chose to vote early at City Hall or by absentee ballot.
As of March 2, 2024, there are 15,833 registered voters in Sanford/Springvale. 4,825 are Democrats and 4,168 are Republicans. The other three official political parties in Maine are Green Independent, Libertarian and No Labels, but the largest number of registered voters in our community are unenrolled in any party.
