Sanford Performing Arts Center kicks off Black History Month with Step Afrika!, a global show that introduces audiences to traditional African step and contemporary rhythmic dance popularized by historically African-American fraternities and sororities. Showtime is 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28 on the SPAC stage at Sanford High School.

Founded in 1994 by C. Brian Williams, Step Afrika! is the first professional company dedicated to the tradition of stepping — a percussive dance form that uses the body as an instrument. It expands on stepping’s unique American history by integrating songs, storytelling, humor and audience participation in traditional Zulu dance. Step Afrika! is one of the world’s top 10 African American dance companies and has toured more than 50 countries.
