Fire Department Log: July 2022
Fires
The Sanford Fire Department battled a number of blazes around town in the month of July. On the 1st of the month, a brush fire on Ethan’s Way was due to combustion of dried leaves at a construction site. That same day, Engine 1 responded to Payne St. to investigate damage caused by smoking materials. The Department also responded to Nason St. that day for someone burning debris illegally. On July 2, there was a trash can fire on Emile Lavasseur Dr. The following day, two units responded to a woods fire along the trail crossing River St. The cause was undetermined. On July 5, a brush fire on Timothy Ln. was caused by ash disposal.
July 13, the Department provided mutual aid to Acton for a house fire. Firefighters were able to save a dog that was inside the house. On the 17th, mutual aid was provided to the Wells Department for an attic fire caused by a lightning strike. July 21, a trash fire on Breary Ave, caused by intentionally burning wire, and a fire near the tree line on Leo St. kept firefighters busy. The following day, all units responded to a kitchen fire on at the Yorkshire on the Green condos on Main St. Fortunately, the building’s sprinkler system kept damage to a minimum – see photo above.
Mutual aid was provided to the Lyman FD for a woods fire on July 23. On the 26th, burned food on Pleasant St. activated a smoke alarm. The fire was confined to the container. Engine 4 responded to a campfire on Riverside Ave on July 27. That same day, the Department was called to a small grease fire at the Third Alarm Diner on Washington St. It was extinguished after turning off the gas supply and using a CO2 extinguisher. It was not a large enough fire to cause the automatic fire suppression systems to activate, was contained to the grill itself and did not spread. Quick action by the caller and the fire fighters led to a positive result.
On July 28, another outdoor fire on Riverside Ave. was described as intentional. July 31st, firefighters responded to Mayflower Dr. for a cooking fire, fortunately confined to the container. The Department also responded to three reports of unauthorized burning during the month, and one which turned out to be authorized.
Other Incidents
Other incidents during the month of July included two cases of low hanging wires, a gasoline/flammable liquid spill, three gas leaks, two electrical wiring problems, an overheated motor, six downed power lines, one call for arcing or shorted electrical equipment, one water or steam leak, an animal rescue (see this story), one smoke scare, one call for smoke or odor removal and four calls logged as good intent call, other.
EMS
There were 289 calls for emergency medical services in July. 79 people received first aid, 150 received basic life support services, and 93 received advance life support. 236 individuals were transported to hospitals. EMS personnel responded to 12 motor vehicle accidents with injuries, another dozen without injuries, and one motor vehicle/pedestrian accident. 26 invalids were assisted.
Other
During the month of July, eleven calls were dispatched and cancelled en route. There were nine calls where no incident was found upon arrival. There were 27 responses due to unintentional alarm activation or malfunctioning equipment. There was one false alarm or call, and two false calls described as mischievous or malicious.
