At the March 5 City Council Meeting, Sanford Public Works Employee Cal Bond was presented with a commendation for his actions on January 14, 2024, during the snowstorm.
Route 202, which does not fall under the purview of the City of Sanford, was rendered impassable by the large amount of ice covering the road. In a letter addressed to City Manager Steve Buck, by Director of Public Works/City Engineer Matthew Hill, Hill wrote of the situation, “with numerous vehicles including large trucks trapped on and off the road; and our partner agencies unable to respond: Cal Bond responded in City Vehicle 09-91 aka “The Beast” and threaded his way up and down the mountain. He used his driving skill, operational experience, and sheer gumption to rescue motorists, prevent further accidents, prevent further property damage, and potentially save lives; going well above and beyond the call of duty.”
He continued, “The fact that this situation did not turn into something much more serious was, in no small part, thanks to Cal Bond. His preparedness and actions even surpassed the strong work ethic and positive attitude that he brings to the Department of Public Works Highway Division on a daily basis.”
After receiving his commendation, Bond stood for a picture surrounded by his family and co-workers.
