Sanford High School held its Winter Sports Award Presentations in the Performing Arts Center on Monday, March 4th, to recognize student-athletes and their teams’ accomplishments.
Athletic Director Zach Lemelin started the evening with opening remarks and highlighted two student-athletes for their recent performances in the postseason: Tucker Walker, who won the shot put at the Class A Indoor Track Championships in a school record-breaking throw and Ayden Lockard, who was the only SHS athlete competing on the Noble/Marshwood/Sanford Hockey co-op team. Lockard led Class A in goals scored this winter.
Lemelin also recognized all-academic students who maintained at least a 92.5 grade average before acknowledging members of the high school’s leadership council team.
Following Lemelin’s remarks, each coach had the opportunity to reflect on their respective teams’ seasons.
Boys’ basketball coach Jacob Mills started things off by giving Tyler Sevigny and Ben Terrell his Most Improved Player awards. Makai Bougie earned the Most Valuable Player award, leading the Spartans in points, rebounds, and steals while being named one of the ten best players in the SMAA Conference.
Finally, Mills gave his Spartan Award to Tanner McCann. The Spartan Award is given to the basketball player who positively represents Sanford on the court, in the community, and the classroom. The boys’ team finished the regular season with a 9-9 record, earning the No. 4 seed in the Class AA South playoffs.
Winter Cheer Coach Catrina Woodard followed, giving her Most Improved Award to Harlow Noble. Natalie Lam was given the team’s MVP Award for being the best tumbler and jumper. Woodard then gave the Coach’s Award to Taylor Coffey, who Woodard said was the epitome of a team player.
Indoor Track Head Coach Magnes Lewis gave his Coach’s Award for the girls’ team to Caylee Dubois and the boys’ team to Zach Michienzi. Lily Peters earned the MVP Award for the girls’ team for making the podium in the long jump at the SMAA Southwestern Championships. Lewis then named Walker the MVP of the boys’ team for his prowess in the shot put.
Girls’ basketball coach Rossie Kearson discussed the teams’ strong season as the Spartans finished the regular season with a 12-6 record, earning the No. 4 seed in the playoffs. Kearson highlighted his team’s comeback playoff win against Thornton Academy to advance to the Class AA South regional semifinals. Kearson gave his Coach’s Award to Hailey Tarbox, Paige Sevigny, and Julissa McBarron.
The wrestling team had a great season under the guidance of head coach Nate Smith. They finished 17-4 and were the runners-up at the Class A State Dual Championships. Additionally, they won the Sullivan Dual Championships for the second straight season. Smith honored the team’s captains, Luke Callis, James Chaplick, Canton Hill, and Mason Van Gieson, with a t-shirt commemorating their leadership.
