Roland “Jake” M. Jackson, 85, of Sanford, died Wednesday October 18, 2023 in Sanford. He was born in Sanford on January 21, 1938 the son of Roland M. and Eleanor (Walker) Jackson. After graduating from high school, he joined the Navy serving for three years including time on the USS Remey. Roland worked at Pioneer Plastics and at Cyro until his retirement in 1985. He volunteered at the soup kitchen from 1987-1990 and was a Life Member of the Elks Club. He enjoyed singing in the choir at Notre Dame and Holy Family Church, playing pool, going to bingo with his wife, getting together with the guys, scratching lottery tickets, going for drives and taking his grandchildren wherever they needed to go. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marie (McDonald) Jackson; his children, Gregory Jackson of Falmouth, Mark Jackson of Sanford and Jodi Spulick of Sanford; six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren, A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Therese of Lisieux Parish, Holy Family Church in Sanford on Monday October 30th at 10 am. Judith Ann (Goodness) Farrell, 80, of Sanford died peacefully surrounded by her loving family on September 9, 2023 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough. She was born on May 5, 1943 in Skowhegan to Joseph and Florence (Murray) Goodness. Judith was a devoted mother and grandmother to her five children and grands. She enjoyed reading and working on word searches in her spare time. Family and friends adored spending time with her as she was the “cat’s meow”. Her surviving children are Cheryl Farrell, Jim Farrell, Kathy Pare, Mark Farrell, and Donald Farrell, a brother Gerald Goodness and a sister-in-law Lorraine Goodness, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Gosnell Memorial Hospice for the care they provided. At her request there was no service. Joseph A. E. Garand, 88, of Sanford, died peacefully at his home on Friday Oct. 20, 2023. He was born in Biddeford on Oct. 29, 1934, the son of Jacques and Clara (Fecteau) Garand. Joe graduated from St. Louis High School and entered the Air Force in 1955, serving for 20 years. He married Simonne Cote in 1956 and together they raised three children. After he retired from the Air Force in 1975, he and his family returned to Maine, where he worked at Pratt &Whitney until his retirement. Joe was never far from aviation. He also enjoyed miniature horses, traveling with his wife, including driving along the coast, and walking on the beach. After Simonne’s passing in 2009, Joe became more active in the VFW and the DAV as well as other veterans’ organizations. He is survived by his sister, Sr. Clara Garand PM of Marlboro, Mass.; his children, Charlotte of Sanford, Roch of Sanford and Antoine of Florida; his two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Visiting hours will be at the Carll, Heald and Black Funeral Home in Springvale on Monday, Oct. 30 from 4 to 7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Therese of Lisieux Parish, Holy Family Church on Tuesday, Oct. 31, at 10:30 am.
