Residents and staff from the Newton Center transferred to their brand new space next door at Summer Commons this past week. Summer Commons, pictured above, is a new state-of-the-art licensed 64-bed skilled nursing care center combined with a 30-bed assisted living unit specializing in Memory Care. It is managed by North Country Associates, a Maine-based company with facilities across the state and in Massachusetts. Once the Newton Center is completely cleared out, it will be demolished.

Starting Monday, May 17, Mount Hope Road will be CLOSED to traffic due to blasting. The anticipated reopening date is Monday, May 24, subject to change. For more information, contact the Department of Public Works: 324-9140.

Struggling to afford your internet service? The Emergency Broadband Benefit is an FCC program to help families and households during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Emergency Broadband Benefit will provide a discount of up to $50 per month towards broadband service for eligible households and up to $75 per month for households on qualifying Tribal lands. Eligible households can also receive a one-time discount of up to $100 to purchase a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet from participating providers if they contribute more than $10 and less than $50 toward the purchase price. Sanford High School will be giving the Maine State Science Assessment to all 3rd year students (juniors) at 7:50am on Monday, May 17th.  The exam will last approximately 4 hours and juniors may leave after they complete the exam and have lunch.  On the 17th, the 10th and 12th grade students will participate in classes remotely from home in order to provide the space necessary to administer the test with limited distractions.  9th grade students will follow their regular schedule in-person or via Zoom during the day at Sanford High. Bus transportation and lunch will be as scheduled.

Got a creative kid? Sanford Rec’s fabulous Art Camp is designed for grades 1-7.  They will enjoy high quality (and very fun) art including some new techniques.  This program is offered for the curious mind. The camp will be instructed by Deb Farnham who is also the St. Thomas Art Teacher. Art Camp will be held on four Monday afternoons from July 12 through August 2 at Carl J. Lamb School. Register at
