Community Calendar: October 10-16, 2022

Monday, October 10

Indigenous Peoples Day, all City offices, schools and libraries will be closed. Trash will be picked up as usual.

10th Annual Communities Care Day, 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., North Parish Church, 893 Main St. This is a day of serving our communities by meeting some of the needs of those who are experiencing challenging times. Free breakfast and lunch, free haircuts and nail polishing, free blood pressure screening. Free store with bedding and towels, clothing and shoes, socks and underwear, toiletries and personal care items, 9v smoke detector batters, winter coats and boots. Child care is provided so parents have time to shop and check out resources. For more info, call 207-324-3163. All are welcome.

Tuesday, October 11

Municipal Operations and Property Subcommittee, 8:30 a.m. via Zoom. The agenda includes discussion of whether to have the Holly Daze Parade, update on grants for Carpentier Park and the High School Trail, discussion of whether to proceed with vacating the City’s interest in the extension of Coolidge St. between Harding and Putnam, and other items.

Red Cross Blood Drive, 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., City Hall, 919 Main St.

Bingo, Sanford Elks Lodge, 13 Elm St. Doors open at 4:00 p.m. and games start at 6:00. Must be 18 to play.

Matthew Meal, 5:30 – 6:30 p.m., St. Ignatius Café, 25 Riverside Ave. Free pasta dinner, open to all.

Wednesday, October 12

Land Bank Commission, 8:45 a.m. via Zoom. The agenda includes reviewing and making a recommendation on the Requests for Qualifications for residential redevelopment services.

Puzzle Exchange, 6:00 – 6:30 p.m., Goodall Library, 952 Main St. Puzzles must be complete and in good shape with original box, from a smoke free home.

Design Review Committee, 6:00 p.m. via Zoom. Agenda TBA.

State and Local Candidates Night, 6:00 p.m., Council Chambers at City Hall, also streamed by WSSR-TV and at https://www.youtube.com/c/WSSRTV and recorded for later viewing. Candidates for City Council, School Committee and State Legislature will appear and answer questions.

Thursday, October 13

Senior Food Mobile, 10:00-11:30 a.m., Crossroads United Methodist Church, 15 Grammar Rd. For anyone over 60 years old in need of food assistance: produce for all, commodities for those who meet income eligibility requirements.

Friday, October 14

St. Thérèse of Lisieux Parish Harvest/Holiday Fair, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., St. Ignatius Gym, Riverside Ave. The famous Knights of Columbus Turkey Dinner will be available in the downstairs Café  from 5 to 6:30 p.m. There will be shopping upstairs in the gym, and the famous “Cookie-Walk.” There will also be cash raffles, a penny raffle, and much more. Family Fun Night, 6:00 p.m., Pleasant St. Free Baptist Church, 10 Pleasant St., Springvale. Come celebrate Fall. There’ll be pies and cider, family photos, a raffle for a little bundle of Fall giveaway, and a showing of ‘It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown!’ All FREE!

Saturday, October 15

St. Thérèse of Lisieux Parish Harvest/Holiday Fair, 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., St. Ignatius Gym, 25 Riverside Ave. Lunch from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., includes pork pie and other a la carte meals. There will be shopping upstairs in the gym, and the famous “Cookie-Walk.” There will also be cash raffles, a penny raffle, and much more.

Community Sew, 9:00 a.m. – noon, Sanford First Baptist Church, 905 Main St. Dress a Girl Around the World will host a community SEW at Sanford First Baptist Church. Come sew simple dresses for girls to help protect them from a life of sex/slavery. During the last six years they have distributed over 26,000 locally made dresses to girls in 30 countries. Some sewing experience required. Check out their Facebook page Dress a Girl Around the World-Southern Maine. If you would like to participate, please register at DressAGirlSMaine@gmail.com.

Corner Cupboard, 10:00 a.m. – noon, Sanford Unitarian Universalist Church, 5 Lebanon St. Non-food essential item pantry offering personal care products, paper goods, cleaning supplies, household items and baby needs. All are welcome.

Carl and Beverly Delano Memorial Dinner, 4:30 – 6:00 p.m., Sanford First Baptist Church, 905 Main St. Eat in or take out turkey dinner with all the fixings and homemade pie for dessert. Reservations required and must be made by October 9th. Call 324-5456. $12 adults, $6 kids 10 and under – pay at the entrance on Kimball Street. Benefits Operation Christmas Child.

Sunday, October 16

Classic Car Show, noon – 4:00 p.m., American Legion, 656 Main St. Benefit to raise money for an elevator for the building. Raffles, music and more. Registration fee for show vehicles $25. Cars, trucks, bikes welcome.

Firefighter Memorial Ceremony, 12:30 p.m., Sanford Regional Technical Center adjacent to the Fire Science Wing. There will be a procession of firefighters and a brief service. Refreshments will be served afterward. If you have any questions, call Jim Pickering at 207-432-4832.

4th Annual Apple Tasting, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., McDougal Orchards, 201 Hanson Ridge Rd. Try around 30 different apple varieties grown in Springvale, from the most popular varieties to unique heirlooms that have hints of pears, strawberries and even tropical fruits. Event is BYOB (and BYO-picnic dinner if you feel so inclined). $15/person (free for kids under 10).
