Community Calendar: November 21-27, 2022

Monday, November 21

School Committee, 6:00 pm, City Hall Council Chambers, 919 Main St., and via Zoom. The agenda includes an update on last week’s active shooter threat, discussion and possible decision on a 2023/24 schedule for SHS/SRTC, and other items.

Tuesday, November 22

Municipal Operations and Property Subcommittee, 8:30 am via Zoom. The agenda includes discussions on new Central Park benches, the dock at Number One Pond, request to accept Orioles Way as a City street, winter parking moratorium, and other items.

Public Safety Subcommittee, 11:00 am via Zoom. The agenda includes discussion on parking for events at Shaw Field, an ordinance prohibiting certain vehicles from parking all night on any public way, Police Department updates, and other items.

Zoning Subcommittee, 1:00 p.m. via Zoom. The agenda includes discussion on the chicken ordinance in light of recent changes to the Maine state Constitution regarding food sovereignty.

Land Bank Commission, 2:00 pm via Zoom. The agenda includes discussion of Land Bank properties and process.

Bingo, Sanford Elks Lodge, 13 Elm St. Doors open at 4:00 p.m. and games start at 6:00. Must be 18 to play.

Wednesday, November 23

Thanksgiving week: All City Offices and schools will be closed. Springvale Library will be closed through 11/26 for carpet cleaning. Please note, many places may close early this day.

Thursday, November 24

Thanksgiving Day. All City offices, schools, libraries and the transfer station will be closed. There will be no trash/recycling pickup.

St. Thérèse of Lisieux Food Bank, noon to 2:00 pm, St. Ignatius Gym, 25 Riverside Ave.

Free Thanksgiving Meal, 1:00 – 5:00 pm, Sanford-Springvale VFW Post 9935, 1 Hutchinson St. Turkey, ham and all the trimmings. Desserts, too! For more info call 207-324-1142.

Friday, November 25

Thanksgiving week: Goodall Library will be closed. Thursday’s trash and recycling will be picked up.

Sanford Elks Giving Trees, 8:00 am – 7:00 pm, Sanford Elks Lodge, 13 Elm St. Come tour the festive displays and enjoy cocoa and cookies. Children will be able to make a Christmas card for a veteran. Free and open to the public. Purchase raffle tickets for a chance to win your favorite tree!

Parentally Challenged – Comedian Juston McKinney, 7:00 pm, Sanford Performing Arts Center, 100 Alumni Blvd. Comedian (and former York County Sherriff’s Deputy) Juston McKinney has specials on Comedy Central, Showtime, Amazon Prime and has made multiple Tonight Show appearances. In this show he talks about his greatest achievement and challenge yet… Parenting! Using multi-media, he takes you through his personal and hilarious journey of raising children in today’s world. From birth to teenagers to your 30-something who still lives in your basement, Juston covers it all in this PG-13 show. Tickets $24-$29. Purchase online here or at the box office.

Saturday, November 26

Thanksgiving week: Friday’s trash and recycling will be picked up.

Sanford Elks Giving Trees, 8:00 am – 7:00 pm, Sanford Elks Lodge, 13 Elm St. Come tour the festive displays and enjoy cocoa and cookies. Children will be able to make a Christmas card for a veteran. Free and open to the public. Purchase raffle tickets for a chance to win your favorite tree!

Baby Blessings, 10:00 am to noon, St. George’s Episcopal Church, 3 Emerson St. The fourth Saturday of every month the church offers free, emergency assistance to parents who need help obtaining baby necessities. Diapers, wipes, and occasional other items may be available. Proof of residence or income is not required.

Sunday, November 27

Sanford Elks Giving Trees, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm, Sanford Elks Lodge, 13 Elm St. Come tour the festive displays and enjoy cocoa and cookies. Children will be able to make a Christmas card for a veteran. Free and open to the public. Purchase raffle tickets for a chance to win your favorite tree!

Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus, 10:00 am to noon, Springvale Library, 443 Main St. Girls Who Grant is hosting this annual photo event – taking pictures to get your Christmas cards ready and asking for donations only. Proceeds will be donated to the Springvale Library.
