The Beginner Dulcimer Group at Goodall Library

Making sweet music together: The Beginner Dulcimer Group gave their spring performance last week at Goodall Library. To hear them perform one of the songs they learned, go here. If you’d like to learn to play this instrument, you can check out the library’s dulcimer for free with your library card.

New rent relief program to offer assistance: A pilot program, to be developed and administered by Maine Housing, could provide up to $800 per month in rent relief for up to two years to help low-income Mainers avoid eviction. The money would be paid directly to the renter’s landlord. Lawmakers allocated money in the state’s supplemental budget to help renters who are at the greatest risk of facing eviction based on their income. It is estimated that about 2,400 people across the state will qualify. To qualify, renters cannot be using a federal housing voucher to pay rent when they apply, and they cannot be living in a subsidized housing unit. Funding will likely become available in late July.

Behavioral health resources available online: Nasson Health Care has resources available for anyone interested in learning how to overcome depression, anxiety and stress. Behavioral Health handouts offering practical skills and techniques can be found here. For further assistance, primary care patients at Nasson can also schedule an appointment with one of the organization’s behavioral health providers.

Kick off June with live music, food and beer: Waypoint’s Music Fest, scheduled for June 1 from 2 pm to 6 pm, has an electrifying lineup this year, with Motor Booty Affair headlining and featuring Dock Squares. The event, to be held at Waypoint, 5 Dunaway Dr. in Sanford, will offer live music, food trucks, a beer garden and a photo booth. In addition, a raffle will be held, offering the chance to win several donated items, including a Weber grill, Adirondack chairs, an outdoor fire pit and a kayak. General tickets are $30 each and the ticket package, which includes a t-shirt and koozie, is $55. Proceeds will directly support the organization’s children’s programs, providing essential educational and adjunct therapies to children Pre-K to Grade 5 at Fraser Ford School in Sanford. Donation helps fight youth hunger: Atlantic Federal Credit Union donated $10,000 to the Sanford Backpack Program (SBP) last week as part of the Campaign for Ending Hunger in Maine. These funds will support the SBP’s summer food distributions at the Willard School building and Sanford High School, and will allow the organization to provide weekly food-filled boxes to Sanford students and their families as well as to other community members.

Seeking information on damage to sign: Vandalism to the Mousam Way Land Trust sign at the Fawcett Goodwin Reserve off High Street has been a recurring problem. Anyone with any information regarding this damage is asked to email mousamwaylandtrust@gmail.com.

FEMA deadline fast approaching for January storm aid: May 20 is the deadline for Maine residents to apply for financial assistance from FEMA for storm damage that occurred Jan. 9 through 13. If you experienced losses from this storm, go here to apply for assistance or visit the FEMA Disaster Recovery Center at 585 N. Berwick Rd. in Wells.

Theft at Hannaford: Sanford Police Department (SPD) is seeking the public’s help in identifying the person involved in a theft of personal property at Hannaford on April 28. The department has posted a photo captured by the store’s video on the SPD Facebook page. Anyone who has information or is able to identify the person in the photo is asked to contact Officer Belleard at 207-324-3644, ext. 129. See the photo here.

Cruisin’ on a Wednesday afternoon: The Maine Coastal Cruisers Club is hosting a weekly cruise in at Shain’s of Maine on Wednesdays from 4 pm to 7 pm.

YMCA expands Child Watch hours for its members: Prime Time Child Watch hours have changed at the Sanford-Springvale YMCA. Prime Time, now open Monday through Thursday at 3:30 pm, is a free service that allows YMCA members to sign their children in for child watch for up to two hours while they work out, take a group class or participate in another activity at the YMCA.
