Sanford Fire Department Log: May 1-15, 2022

Fires

Outdoor fires are very common in spring, as shown by the number of incidents in the first half of this month. On May 1, a woods fire on Pierce Ave., caused by disposal of wood stove ash, brought Engines 4 and 5 to the rescue. On May 9, a mulch fire on Main St. was caused by a cigarette. That same day, all units and mutual aid from surrounding communities responded to a 3-alarm house fire on Kirk St. in Springvale. Fortunately, there were no injuries. While our Department was battling that blaze, Kennebunk firefighters took care of another mulch fire on Main St. in Sanford.

On the 11th, leaves on Pierce Ave. ignited while being mowed. Engine 4 responded. Two units provided mutual aid to North Berwick for a woods fire there. While that was going on, three units responded to a car fire on North Ave. The following day, May 12, there were two cooking fires. One on Spartan Dr. was caused by burned tray liners in the kitchen. The second one, on High St. was due to burning food left unattended.

Other Incidents

During the first half of May, there was one report of burning that was authorized, one smoke scare, and one HazMat investigation, with no hazardous materials found. There was a carbon monoxide detector activation with no CO found. One call was put down to severe weather. One call was categorized as a malicious or mischievous false report.

EMS

On May 11, the Department responded to a male who fell while on a roof on Roles St. There were 100 others calls for emergency medical services during the period. 22 people received first aid, 62 received basic life support and 29 received advanced life support. 91 people were taken to the hospital. Firefighters responded to two motor vehicle accident with injuries. Two invalids were given assistance.

Other

Three calls were dispatched and cancelled en route. On five occasions, there was no incident found upon arrival. There were five incidents of unintentional activations of alarms or malfunctioning equipment.
